Data
set name: zoning coverage and shapefile
Description of change request/notification:
In continuing our transition from coverages to geodatabases, we will be making the zoning information (currently delivered both as coverages and shapefiles) available in shapefile format only.
Coverage-specific fields (AREA, PERIMETER, ZONING#, ZONING-ID, ZACRES) will be dropped. In their place will be gdb-feature-class-specific fields (area, len). The field names of the meaningful fields (BASEZONE, ZONING, CITY) will not change. These fields will also remain string fields, however their length has increased (from 5, 10, & 12 respectively to 6, 12, & 50).
Values and their definitions for these fields will remain largely the same, with one exception: The CITY field previously contained values such as "ADA" and "EAGLE," but it now contains "Ada County" and "City of Eagle." Also, when we inherited the zoning coverage, we noticed a few instances where a feature's ZONING value read something like "R-1DD" and its BASEZONE read "R-1D." Some research found that the city in question had no "R-1D" zoning designation, and that instead the BASEZONE should have read "R-1" and the "DD" indicated some additional information. The QC process developed with information in our database will virtually eliminate instances like this in the future.
I've posted a sample shapefile in the "Change Management" folder in the "Files" section.
Purpose for the change: Internal changes will make delivery of data in the old format impossible.

Potential impact to end users: Minimal, based on preliminary queries.
As has been discussed in the past, this change is an intermediate measure meant to provide a platform that will mean minimal change for users of the data while we build, test, and rebuild our geodatabase and develop new workflows for internal processes. Once our geodatabase schema is stable, then we have every intent to expose the geodatabase for consumption by SIG members & others. In the meantime, the shapefile is the most universally acceptable format.
